Hammondsport – Coolest Small Town in America

September 7, 2011

Hammondsport, N.Y. – One small town in the Southern Tier could be making headlines.
The town is in the running to win Budget Travel Magazine’s “Coolest Small Town in America” Award for 2012.

It may have been overcast and rainy in the Twin Tiers Monday, but the shops and square in Hammondsport were buzzing.

The lake-side community’s charm, water access, and abundance of things to do from wine tastings to museums, draws in visitors from across the world according to tourists.

“You immediately come in and feel warm and welcome,” said first-time Hammondsport visitor Sandra Stuart, of Castle Rock, Colorado.

“I’ve always wanted to see the Glenn Curtiss Museum. I’ve read about Glenn Curtiss since I was very young; I found the museum very interesting,” said Paul Helman, of Evanston, Illinois.

Budget Travel Magazine’s ‘Top 10’ ranks small towns across the country on having “an edge and a heart.”

Hammondsport is currently 5th.

“It would be great to draw more people to the area, being a small business; we struggle to stay alive in today’s economy. So, the more people we can attract, the better,” said Browsers owner Pam Knapp.

Scandia House owner Vicki Mills said Hammondsport deserves to be ‘number 1’ because, “It’s just a charming village that you don’t see very much anymore in the United States. If you do, they’re few and far between.”
